It’s a pleasure craft. Dream boat, the toy or a bucket list to some. We identify it as that and handle each nomination or Yachts with such sensitivity. It is at times made of GRP (Glass reinforced plastic) or FRP (Fiber reinforced plastic). Bigger yachts may also be constructed and made of Aluminum. In general, the size of the yachts varies from 30ft in length to approximately 150 ft or more. As the length of the yacht increases so does the number of cabins inside the yacht, and also the horsepower of the propulsion engines and complications with respect to electrical system.
While yachts were first developed to serve a specific need (to be used in the Navy to pursue pirates and other criminals), yachts are now widely seen as luxury recreational watercrafts that are used for leisure rather than work.
There are different types of yachts for eg. sailing yachts, weekender yachts, cruising yachts, luxury sailing yachts, racing yachts, day cruiser yachts, sport fishing yachts and luxury yachts. Like all the best boat brands, the best type of yacht will have to do with your budget, desired function for the boat and the relative size and type of hull and cabin space you desire.
Apart from the capital expense in owning a yacht there are other expenses like berthing charges inside Marinas, maintenance of the yacht, fuel for the engines, local taxes, registration, periodic under water hull inspection, employing crew for operation and maintenance of the yacht etc.
A Yacht is generally considered an epitome of luxury. As the size of the yacht increase, so does increase the amenities inside the yacht. Yachts are usually centrally air conditioned. The enclosures in the yacht like the saloon, wheelhouse, bedrooms are usually carpeted. Stereophonic music systems are also provided, Bedrooms are usually provided with washroom facilities. Home theater in the saloon and TVs in the bedroom are common. Bigger yachts have a proper pantry with cooking aides like hotplates, microwave, refrigerator, mixier and a wine cooler.
The flooring is wooden usually of teak and well-polished.
Yachts usually operate in sheltered waters like Creeks, Marinas, Gulfs, Bays, or Lagoons. It is not usually designed to face the rough weather of the open ocean.
Bigger yachts have a tender and/or Jet skis attached to them. The jet skis are stowed inside the yacht and can be taken out and lowered into the sea and taken on pleasure cruises when the yacht has sailed past the harbor waters. The tender may be stowed in the yacht or it may be towed along with the yacht. The tender can also be used for pleasure rides when the yacht has left the harbor waters. The jet skis are small in size compared to tender. The tender has a seating capacity for more than one person whereas jet ski is operated and manned by a single person (or two atmost). Both are very maneuverable, but jet ski has better maneuverability as compared to tender being small in size.
Smaller yachts operate in the range of 30 to 40 knots speed whereas big yachts operate in the range of 20 knots.
The propulsion for the yachts is usually diesel engines coupled to a propeller through a reduction gear. Usually there are two propulsion engines port and stbd.
Many of the yachts have a freshwater maker on board to provide clean drinking water for cooking, bathing and domestic needs.
