Yacht Inspection
Chief Engr. Ramesh Krishnan
Yacht are boats mainly for pleasure, cruising, racing,
in marinas, inland waterways, near harbor limits. The
yachts are constructed mainly of GRP i.e. glass reinforced
plastic or FRP fiber reinforced plastic. The bigger
yachts are constructed of Aluminum. The size of the
yachts varies from approximately 30 feet to approximately
140 feet.
• Yacht is an epitome of luxury. The interiors are usually
well appointed.
• The yacht inspection consists of the following.
1) Inspection of the hull
Part of the hull is above water line and part of
the hull below water line. On GRP yachts the moisture
meter is used on the gel coating to detect the presence
of moisture between layers. Bigger yachts which are
of Aluminum construction is confined to visual inspection
only. Also, review of the documents related to painting.
An out of water inspection of the yacht is required
to carry out the above. Besides the hull has hull fittings,
penetrations, and ports.
The hull fittings are the propeller, rudder, trim tabs,
stabilizer, propeller shaft, bow thruster, stern thruster,
etc.
Ports or openings are sea water pumps inlet/outlet,
Main engine cooling water inlet/outlet, A/C cooling
water inlet/outlet, etc.
On Aluminum hull boats there are Zinc anodes fitted
all around the underwater hull. They are checked for
wastage.
A visual inspection is done to check everything is proper
and in place.
2) Inspection of its interiors
The interiors consist of accommodation which is
normally air conditioned. It will have an attached washroom.
Bigger yachts have proper bathing facilities. Smaller
yachts have only one room as accommodation whereas bigger
yachts have a series of rooms all with attached washrooms.
The smaller yachts have a music system, television,
portable refrigerator, all attached to the accommodation
whereas the big yachts have a proper sized kitchen with
all amenities like baking oven, microwave oven, induction
burners, refrigerators, water coolers, wash basins etc.
Most of the yachts have a sundeck with cushions
Bigger yachts have a carpeted lounge with a big TV and
a music system with strategically positioned speakers.
All rooms are centrally air conditioned.
We do a check of all furniture, upholstery, fittings,
lights whether they as per original plan. A brief check
on the appliances whether they are functional.
On the deck of the yacht we do a check with the moisture
meter to detect the presence of moisture between the
layers of coating.
3) Inspection of the Engine room
Inspection of the engine room comprises of yachts
main engines usually two in number. If there is no sea
trial the engines are run at idle RPM for about 15 minutes.
Yachts generators are started and kept on idling mode
for about 15 minutes.
Visual Inspection of A/C plant and the chiller.
Visual Inspection of the Bilge pump.
Visual inspection sea water cooling pump.
All the above are checked for leaks of cooling water,
sea water, lube oil etc.
Visual inspection of Firefighting arrangements.
General appearance of engine room bilges.
A lube oil analysis test of main engine crankcase oil
is also done to assess the quality of lubricant oil.
Condition of the ship’s batteries.
4) Sea trial
A sea trial is conducted for approximately two hours
out of which one hour is devoted to run the main engines
at the max ,possible RPM continuously for one hour if
circumstances permit .If the sea trial is inside the
Marina then running at maximum engine RPM is limited.
Following parameters are noted during sea trial. Engine
noise and vibration. Engine lube oil temperature and
pressures. Engine cooling water temperatures and pressures.
Engine RPM.
Yacht speed in knots. Maneuvering to record turning
circle, Reversing the yacht, bow thruster movements,
yacht bearings amongst many other technical parameters.
If gauges are provided, then fuel consumption for the
trial is also noted.
The above parameters are noted at regular intervals
during the sea trial.
A functional check of the bridge equipment is also conducted
during the sea trial.
5) Review of Documents
Review of main engine overhauling reports, total
running hours, hours since last overhaul,
Review of Auxiliary engine overhauling reports
Repair history of the vessel
Review of the vessel certificates
Review of last dock reports/coating/cleaning of hull
marine growth, etc.
Review of painting coating specifications, etc.
Normally pre-purchase (condition survey) of Yacht takes
one full day with sea trial. If there is an out of water
inspection, then for big yachts the inspection spills
over to two days.
